Hains Point East Potomac Park Cherry Blossom Area in DC

One of the best places to enjoy cherry blossoms in Washington DC without any crowds is Hains Point East Potomac Park.

It is one of my favorite places to photograph cherry blossoms in DC, because it’s so pretty! 

Where is East Potomac Park

East Potomac Park is located next to the Tidal Basin on a man-made island in the Potomac River:  Ohio Dr SW, Washington, DC 20024.

The island is between the Washington Channel (the Wharf side) and the Potomac River.  Amenities in East Potomac Park include the East Potomac Park Golf Course, a miniature golf course, a public swimming pool (the East Potomac Park Aquatic Center), tennis courts, and several athletic fields (some configured for baseball and softball, others for soccer, rugby, or football). The park is a popular spot for fishing, and cyclists, walkers, inline skaters, and runners heavily use the park’s roads and paths. A portion of Ohio Drive SW runs along the perimeter of the park. 

Where is Hains Point

Hains Point is inside East Potomac Park, it is the most southern tip of the park: 927 Ohio Dr SW, Washington, DC 20024.  Hains Point is named for the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Peter Conover Hains, the engineer who designed the Tidal Basin. Here, the Potomac River, Washington Channel, and Anacostia River all converge.  “Hains Point: East Potomac Park” is what is named on the NPS website as managed by the NPS.  

Where are the cherry blossoms in Hains Point East Potomac Park

When it comes to cherry blossoms, locals in the DC area often use East Potomac Park and Hains Point interchangeably.   Because Hains Point is at the very tip of East Potomac Park, there are no cherry blossoms at that exact location.

To be more accurate, the cherry blossoms are in East Potomac Park on the Hains Point Loop Trail, as seen in the map below.  The rest of the island, basically the middle, is East Potomac Park Golf Course.

The Hains Point Loop Trail is a one-way 4.1-mile loop that allows car, bike, scooter, and foot traffic.

What you see labeled on Google Maps as “Hains Point East Cherry Blossoms Area,” is not the only area with cherry blossoms.  Cherry blossom trees line nearly all of the 4.1-mile Hains Point Loop Trail.

When Do Cherry Blossoms in East Potomac Park Bloom

Most of the cherry blossoms in East Potomac Park Bloom at the same time as the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin, which typically bloom from the end of March to the beginning of April.  

A second bloom of Kwanzan cherry blossoms blooms mid-April after the first wave of cherry blossoms has faded.

How to see Hains Point East Area Cherry Blossoms

There are multiple ways to view these beautiful blossoms.  You can drive the Hains Point Loop Trail, but sometimes the loop is closed to vehicle traffic.  Unfortunately, the NPS never announces these closures!

You can ride a bike or an electric scooter through here!  However, be aware that the electric scooters and bikes in the area now have geofencing, and they won’t allow you to park your scooter here.  For example, you can’t rent the scooter, park it, and end your rental, then rent the same scooter again.  You will be fined by the scooter company!

If you rent an actual bike from a store, though, that would be a great way to enjoy the East Potomac Park cherry blossoms.

Walking is another option, but it will be a long walk as the loop is 4 miles, and you cannot cut through because of the East Potomac Golf Course in the middle.

What’s the Best Place for Photos at Hains Point:  East Potomac Park

There is no bad spot for cherry blossom photos inside East Potomac Park.  Both the Potomac side and the Washington Channel side of the loop have extremely photogenic cherry blossoms.  The loop trail is entirely lined with cherry blossoms on both sides of the trail, and it is truly magical.

Hains Point/East Potomac Park is completely free with no fees to enter from sunrise to sundown.

East Potomac Park has plenty of free parking lining the loop trail; these spots are all marked.

How Crowded is East Potomac Park

Compared to the Tidal Basin, East Potomac Park is not crowded at all during cherry blossom season in DC.

I’ve gone to Hains Point/East Potomac Park for the last 10 years consistently, during cherry blossom peak bloom in DC and there are barely ever any people here, and this is when the Tidal Basin is at peak crowds.  Most people will park here and then walk to the Tidal Basin.

However, I do want to warn you about traffic.  Because Hains Point/East Potomac Park is often used as a parking lot or a staging area for DC Cherry Blossom Festival events, there can be traffic going into the park.  Or it could be closed altogether to vehicle traffic because of the Cherry Blossom Festival Events.  The NP,S which manages Hains Point, never announces closures, Google Maps also does not update on these closures.  

Additionally, during peak cherry blossom bloom on a weekend, everyone tries to park here, so while there aren’t people looking at the cherry blossoms per se, there are a lot of cars trying to go through this area.

I’ve only run into these unexpected closures on weekends during peak bloom, during events on weekends, and during the government shutdown in 2025.  Otherwise, I’ve never had a problem driving and parking in here.

Is Hains Point: East Potomac Park Worth Visiting for cherry blossoms?

YES!  Of all the cherry blossom locations that’s not the Tidal Basin in DC, this is absolutely my favorite and the best alternative.

Can you take photos in Hains Point?

Yes, you can take photos here!  There are no permits required unless you are setting up structures such as lighting, etc (but always check the NPS website before you book a shoot here).  I’ve used my tripod here multiple times.

Are there bathrooms?

Yes, there are several bathrooms on the Potomac River side of the Hains Point Loop Trail.

Is there public transportation to Hains Point/East Potomac Park?

Unfortunately, no, your options for getting here are driving, walking, biking, or scootering.  The metro stop is not near here (Smithsonian Metro), so you would have to walk quite a bit to get to the park.

Is there parking?

Yes, there is plenty of free parking along the Hains Point Loop Trail.  I usually park at a few different spots when photographing the cherry blossoms.

Can you take pictures in the middle of the Hains Point Loop Trail?

While the Hains Point Loop Trail is open to vehicle traffic, you can absolutely stand in the middle of the street and take a photo!  I’ve done this several times.  People driving in here are usually driving really slowly because they are looking for parking.  There are also lots of runners and bikers on the trail.  

Is there a concession inside the park?

No, there are no concessions inside the park; you cannot buy water or food. 

Is it stroller-friendly?

Yes!  Because the Hains Point Loop Trail is paved, it is stroller-friendly.  However, there are no sidewalks here; you are sharing the road with cars, bikes, and scooters. 

Are dogs allowed?

Yes, leashed dogs are allowed in this park.  

Can I have a cherry blossom picnic at Hains Point?

Yes, you can absolutely have a picnic!  There are plenty of spots to set out a blanket for a picnic.  The Wharf facing side would be quite pretty with all the boats docked on the bank.  Just remember to take all your trash with you.  During the Kwanzan cherry blossom bloom is also a great time to set up a picnic.
